Fort Livingstone

A National Historic Site

Fort Livingstone National Historic Site

The Fort was designated a national historic site to commemorate the first capital of the Northwest Territories, 1876-1877, the original headquarters and first post built specifically for the North West Mounted Police, 1874-1876.

In early May, visit the site to see thousands of garter snakes emerge from their hibernaculum. Mothers Day is usually the best viewing time, but peak times depend on the warming weather. They emerge in larger numbers on warm sunny days as they love to suntan on the boulders by the pit.
